So many pop and rock songs have their roots in classical music. Classical influences on rock'n'roll, Part 2 of a 2-part look.
Emerson Lake and Palmer recorded a number of classical pieces, including Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition. They debuted that performance at the 1970 Isle of Wight Festival.
Deep Purple also took inspiration from Bach for Highway Star. In an interview Ritchie Blackmore said that he wanted, " A very definite Bach sound".
Numerous other songs took inspiration from the classics including, Santana, Rainbow, Elvis, Paul Simon, Eric Carmen, The Beach Boys, Billy Joel, Queen, the list is almost endless.
Did you know that Heavy Metal has its roots in Gustaf Holst's Planets Suite? Black Sabbath's guitarist Tony Iommi's tritone riff was inspired by Holst's Mars. - Have a listen to Part 1.
