A massive supervolcanic eruption roared to life 1.6 billion years ago, in the ancient land that would one day become known as South Australia. This eruption wasn't any ordinary one, though, because it would leave behind what would go n to be known as one of the most unique, and resource rich deposits to exist in Australia.

This super volcano, which created the landform known as the gawler ranges, is one of the only examples on earth, a felsic shield volcano. An incredibly rare phenomenon, as felsic lava isn't known to flow, due to the thick viscosity of it, as a result of a high level of silica and the lower overall temperature that felsic magma exists at. However, this wasn't the case 1.6 billion years ago.

Back then, the earth was different. And a unique chemical composition, coupled with other factors, led to the emergence and eventual construct of one of the rarest volcanic landforms to exist on our planet.
