Ableton has always required its users to pay for upgrades to access the latest features. Live 12 offers new features, MIDI editions, workflow changes, a mixer on the arrangement window, and a new distortion effect. My philosophy has always been that if you already have invested in third-party plugins, then do you really need to upgrade to Ableton Live 12 if you have version 11, 10, or even 9? Particularly if you already have overhyped distortion units such as Saturn and Rift. You should understand the new workflow and then decide whether it's beneficial.
