Here's a quick lesson on an alternate way to play the D7 chord which really makes things sound bluesy.

If you're doing some fingerpicking in A and you switch to the D chord, things tend to sound a little thin if you let the lowest note of the chord be the open D string.

Try hooking your thumb over the fretboard and fretting the 2nd fret on the 6th string. It's not a D note (it's an F#) but it sounds so sweet and instantly bluesy when you work this in next to an A7.
