What does it mean to "solve" Einstein's most important equations (field equations of GR)?

After Einstein published his field equations, the most fundamental equations of general relativity, there was a race to find solutions to them. These solutions would correspond to different spacetime geometries that we could observe, such as gravitational waves travelling through space, or the warping of spacetime around a black hole, or the really trivial one - empty, flat spacetime, with nothing happening at all.

One of the first NON-trivial solutions to be published was by Karl Schwarzschild. It shows the geometry of spacetime around a spherical body, such as a planet, star, or black hole. Importantly the mass has to have an overall neutral charge and not be spinning though. This is known as the Schwarzschild metric or Schwarzschild solution.
