Hello internet, The squelch is one of the easiest sounds in the "psychedelic sound design cookbook" and might be one of the very first sounds you learned how to design. Yet, as easy and simple as the fundamental idea behind it might be, you can still achieve very complex and super psychedelic patches from it.To create my squelches, I like to use Sylenth1 because it has a special gritty and raw character hard to find elsewhere. For the patch, I like to keep it simple by using one single SAW oscillator tuned to a lower octave that feeds into a bandpass 24db/oct filter with a good amount of resonance. (Other synths like Ableton's Analog can create awesome squelches with a 12db/oct bandpass filter, so always experiment to get the best results.)
Modulation-wise, LFO1 is set to S&H with a rate of 1/8 and is responsible for modulating the pitch of the oscillator (you can set the LFO to Unipolar or Bipolar and adjust the modulation amount to your liking). As for LFO2, I like to set it to a slow cycling triangle LFO that modulates the pitch of the oscillator side by side with the first LFO. This way, the second LFO will smooth out the stepped modulation of the first LFO and create a pseudo-humanized modulation.
To spice things up, I like to use the overdrive algorithm of Sylenth1 with an amount set to around 1/3. In my opinion, this overdrive in combination with the filter of Sylenth1 is what makes this synthesizer special for this kind of sound.
Now, all you need to do is feed the patch to a good delay and modulate the filter manually while playing the patch with a random arpeggiator.
But the fun doesn't stop here; I like to push things further by using a random LFO (last shape found in Sylenth1 LFO Shapes) set to a rate of 1/4 to modulate the pitch of the oscillator instead of the S&H one.
