Last year I was interviewed in a podcast, where the host expressed some regret over the lack of black pirates. Being a fan of my channel, he was aware that, contrary to what pop-culture tells us, most Africans found aboard pirate ships were enslaved.

If you want to find free black pirates, you'd have to look at Spanish colonial society. A vast majority of their privateers were native american, african and mixed-race. Whilst most of their names have gone unnoticed, we certainly know the impressive career of one vengeful character, going by the ambiguous name of Diego the Mulatto.
