Love is a beautiful thing, but what of love that turns into something else? Something ugly even. So it was for Matilda; his passion, his muse, and his heart. What began a seemingly harmless affection at a distance soon enough turned into infatuation, and from infatuation into obsession, and from obsession into madness. Ordinarily no emotion can match the intensity of love. But love that is scorned can invoke a rage deeper even than the love that preceded it. When turned inwards that rage can end in tragedy, but when turned outwards, when projected onto the object of love, it can breed not only tragedy but also something far darker. So it was for poor Matilda; his inspiration, his fascination, his world.
