I’m talking about the famous 303 Acid sound, which is, in itself, a very simple sound to design🤔. We need to feed a saw wave through a highly resonant low-pass filter (preferably 18dB/oct, but 24dB/oct would do the job perfectly), and then everything goes into a heavy distortion module. The filter must be modulated with a simple and plucky A/D (Attack-Decay) envelope, same for the Amp, and that’s about it.
🟢 My choice of synth to recreate such a classic sound is Arturia’s Pigments because it offers us a wide variety of filters to choose from, each with its distinct flavor. My favorites are the Mini and the multimode 24dB/oct filter. When it comes to distortion, the only limit is your imagination, as Arturia offers 16 algorithms of saturation and distortion to color your sound with.
🤓 But there’s a third hidden module that makes the 303 sound the way it does, and that’s the way the sequencer of the original TB303 unit dealt with slides and accents. Luckily, the sequencer of Arturia’s Pigments not only provides extensive control over slides and accents (which by the way, I like to control with velocity and use it to modulate the drive of the distortion) but also comes with a powerful randomization algorithm that use to create Acid patterns on the fly.
