Central America includes Guatemala, Belize,
Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and Panama. These small countries
have a combined area similar to Thailand and a population of about 50 million.
In the mid-19th century, Central America was mostly united as the Federal Republic of
Central America or FRCA. This union came from the Spanish colonization era and the
independence movements that followed.
The FRCA faced problems due to internal divisions between liberals and conservatives.
Conflicts over the role of the Catholic Church in government made things worse.
Civil wars and political instability in the 1830s led to the breakup of the FRCA.
Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Honduras, and other regions left, leaving only El Salvador.
Attempts to reunify Central America happened in the 1890s. But geopolitical factors,
including interference from major powers like the United States, blocked these efforts.
Integration efforts still continue through organizations like the Central American
Integration System or SICA.
