
Quoting survivors, fire service officials said some 15-20 people remained still missing as they suspended the rescue operation at 9:00pm. The rescuers were unable to recover the capsized ship from the river bed till the filing of this report in the evening.
Fire service officials initially suspected that the lack of skill of the master might have caused the accident while the shipping ministry ordered a probe, asking the three-member probe body to submit its report in three working days.
The launch, ML Afsar Uddin, capsized after it collided with the sea-going cargo ship MV Rupshi-9 at about 2:30pm. Both the vessels were going to Munshiganj from Narayanganj.
