Over the past year, one of the biggest challenges we’ve faced on the property has been water management—something we didn’t fully anticipate when we bought it. While having water is a blessing, the lack of French drains, no gutters, and water naturally taking the path of least resistance—combined with a particularly rainy winter and spring—has caused ongoing issues around the buildings.

Months of excavating and moving soil with the dumper have left the garden in a messy state, with deep ruts made worse by the rain. So this week, Philippe decides to clean things up by flattening the ruts and tidying the work area. He also extends three ditches: one above the parking area, another to expand drainage there, and a third in the middle of the garden where a pipe is located. These changes aim to manage the flow of water in a more controlled way.

The spot in the middle of the garden is especially problematic, as it collects water from springs higher up, as well as runoff from the house roof. All of this converges and floods the garden, making it difficult to work. This week’s efforts are all about giving things a temporary fix to keep work areas for the excavator and dumper drier, making future tasks much more manageable.

Later in the week, we’re actually glad for some rain—it gives us a chance to see if the changes are making a difference!

And of course, once the excavator starts up, the chickens know exactly what it means: a worm feast is on the way! I challenge you to find a moment in the video where the chickens aren’t gathered around the excavator.
