The Pastels, a Doo-Wop quartet that first formed up in 1954, were all serving with the U.S. Air Force and stationed at Narsarssuak, Greenland (lead DiFosco "Dee" Ervin, first tenor Richard Travis, second tenor Tony Thomas and baritone Jimmy Willingham), where they whiled away their idle hours honing their harmony skills, and after relocation to Mitchell Air Force Base near Washington D.C., and a well-received performance at the annual Tops In Blue talent contest run at the base, they figured they had a shot at a career in that business. An audition for Bea Calson, owner of Hull Records which had been in business since 1955, saw them perform the Erwin-penned Been So Long, and after some minor tinkering with input by Calson, it came out in late 1957 on her subsidiary label Mascot with the uncredited backing of the Teacho Wiltshire orchestra (Mascot 123).
