Description:

Germany and The Netherlands are planning the world's largest megaproject to protect Europe from rising sea levels: the North European Enclosure Dam. This ambitious plan involves building two massive dams, one linking Norway to Scotland and the other connecting England to France, spanning a total of 637 kilometers.

By 2100, scientists predict sea levels could rise by up to 2 meters, putting coastal areas in Germany, Denmark, and the UK at risk, with The Netherlands being the most vulnerable. But this megaproject is not without challenges. The dam would need to cross the 321-meter-deep Norwegian Trench, raising questions about its feasibility.

Can Europe pull off this engineering marvel to fight climate change? Let us know what you think!

Transcript:

Germany and The Netherlands have proposed the world’s biggest megaproject that would protect Europe from the rising sea levels. These two massive dams linking Norway with Scotland and England with France, would have a total length of 637 kilometers and would completely enclose the north sea.
The scientists believe that the sea levels will increase between 84 centimeters and 2 meters until 2100. This would mean that a lot of costal areas from Germany, Denmark and United Kingdom would be affected, but the most affected country would be The Netherlands, which already have a third of its territory located below sea level.
The North European Enclosure Dam would practically disconnect the Baltic Sea and the North Sea from the Atlantic ocean. The biggest challenge in realizing this megaproject would not be the length or the money needed, but the part of the dam crossing the Norwegian Trench, which have depths of 321 meters. So, do you think it’s possible?
