Mary Shelley was inspired to write Frankenstein during a stormy summer in 1816 while staying at Lake Geneva with Percy Shelley, Lord Byron, and others. Stuck indoors due to bad weather caused by the eruption of Mount Tambora, the group decided to have a ghost story contest.

Mary had a nightmare about a scientist who created life and was horrified by his own creation—that dream became the seed for Frankenstein. She was also influenced by scientific debates of the time, especially around galvanism (using electricity to stimulate life in dead tissue). So, gloomy weather, wild science, and a vivid imagination – boom! Frankenstein was born!
