With our rusty hammer and multi-pack of screws we were ready to tackle any task. So when our friend's Paul and Tara tried to trick us into honing our skills on a quick weekend barn conversion, we lept at the chance!
How naive we were! Five weeks in, with two duff shoulders we're finally getting there.
When you have never done something before in your life, you are probably using completely the wrong tool for the job and to compound the problem the is a CH4 TV film crew breathing down your neck monitoring your every action, things can be tricky.
My motto in life has always been, if a job's worth doing, it's worth doing twice - that's how you learn. In the case of Paul and Tara's barn, we have learnt loads.
Our barn is very different to Paul and Tara's however, we have learnt that trying to apply plaster boards (dry-wall) directly to hand sawn or split 250 year old oak beams isn't really practical. Your eye may say they look straight but they definitely are not! Plaster-boards may initially seem like a quick option, but probably took longer than re-rendering the wall and was a lot more expensive.
It all comes down to time, money and labour. For our barn, there will be no time limit apart for seasonal issues. Money will need to be kept very tight as it is bigger than many 5 bed houses.
Now, we have finished helping our friends out, we can get back to ours.
It's a good job Paul cooks an amazing lunch that's all we can say!
