Plasma cutting:
Plasma cutting is a process that cuts through electrically conductive materials by means of an accelerated jet of hot plasma. Due to the high speed and precision cuts combined with low cost, plasma cutting sees widespread use from large-scale industrial CNC applications down to small hobbyist shops.
Plasma cutting (plasma arc cutting) is a melting process in which a jet of ionised gas at temperatures above 20,000°C is used to melt and expel material from the cut. Plasma cutters are used to perform cutting and gouging operations, with the average hand-held system capable of cutting a maximum metal thickness of about 1 inch.
This heat melts the metal and the gas flow ejects it from the cut. Plasma gases are usually argon, argon/hydrogen or nitrogen.
The major difference between a plasma cutter and a multi-process machine is this: the plasma cutter will have one function, cutting. The multi-process machine will have several functions, usually stick welding and TIG welding in addition to plasma cutting. Then you can easily set your machine weld.
Compressed Air is the most commonly used gas for lower current plasma cutting and works well for most metals from gauge thickness to 1 inch. It leaves an oxidized cut surface. Compressed air can also be used for plasma gouging on carbon steel.
Unfortunately, plasma cutting does have a few drawbacks. Most plasma cutters aren't useful for thicker or denser metals. The fleeting nature of plasma limits their range to a depth of about one inch.
