🇯🇵 Final Adventure in Hakuba | Japanese Alps Gondolas • Snow Monkeys • Olympic Ski Jump 🏂
Hello from Hakuba, a charming town and world-famous ski resort in the Northern Japanese Alps! This was the grand finale of our six-week journey across Japan, and here’s exactly what happens (and is said) in our final video. Enjoy this chronological summary of all the epic moments we captured!
1. Welcome to Hakuba
“Hello and greetings from Hakuba…” — Introduction to the town in Canadian English, highlights it as a quiet destination and perfect place to end our Japan trip.
We promise gondola rides, mountain views, snow monkeys, and a peek at Olympic ski-jump training.
2. Happo-One Gondola Ride 🚡
First we hop on the Happo-One Gondola—bumpy, rickety, and a little nerve-wracking!
Originally planned to hike to Happo Pond, but it got too late: time for a chair-lift upgrade instead.
Mood swing: “Defeated” ➡️ “Totally worth it!” once we crest the summit and see the snowy peaks.
3. Ancient Chair Lift Discovery
We spot a rusted, “abandoned” chair lift from 1998—only to find it still runs!
Reminder: buy full-day pass (¥3,300) at the base to avoid topping up piece-meal (we spent extra yen).
4. Yukata + On-Site Relaxation 🛏️
Quick room tour at our ryokan: pre-made beds, origami treats, tea set ready for matcha.
Dinner shout-out to Blizzard Pizzeria (Aussie-run) for amazing pepperoni and Nutella pizzas.
Day 2: Iwatake Gondola & Alpine Snacking 🌲
5. Forest Hike to Iwatake
Woke to single-digit temperatures—bundled up for a chilly forest trek.
Trail tip: Avoid the smooth bike-path (mountain-biking trails). Follow rough stumps to stay on foot-hiking track.
6. Iwatake Gondola & Summit Views
Another rickety gondola and chair lift—still only ~1.5 m off the ground (grass-level grazing possible).
Clouds rolling in: perfect Alpine drama for our GoPro footage!
7. Top-of-Mountain Café 🥐
City Bakery “Baker’s Muffin”: a cross between a croissant, muffin, cinnamon-apple pastry with walnuts.
Solo seating area tucked away from the tourist photo line—quiet fall foliage immersion.
8. Lunch at Rocks 🍔
Pulled-pork burger and fries at the base station—rock-star fuel for more exploring.
Surprise encounter: wild snow monkeys foraging behind the café!
Day 3: Snow Monkeys, Ski Jumps & Shrine 🌨️
9. Town-Roaming Snow Monkeys 🐒
Two snow monkeys casually foraging in town—chill locals who own the streets off-season.
Pet-dog owner nearly floored when a monkey scampered onto a sign!
10. Buffet Breakfast at Hotel Glad in Ebisuya 🍳
¥1,000/person buffet featuring traditional Japanese (grilled fish, miso soup, natto) + Western fruits, yogurt & eggs.
True Canadian “full charge” to power our next activities!
11. Forest Foot Spa & Onsen Plans
Cozy forest foot spa onsen to soothe hiking boots–tired feet.
Reminder: public onsen available (¥8,000/day) if your lodging lacks one.
12. Olympic Ski-Jump Stadium 🏆
Accidental find: ski-jump training in action! (No speed skating this time, but the jumpers soared.)
Rode chair lift + elevator to the 90 m & 120 m jump towers—jaw-dropping athleticism and stadium views.
13. Hidden Forest Shrine ⛩️
Random shrine just a block from town—serene forest shrine with giant cedar next door.
Tip: wander off the beaten path for magical Hakuba surprises!
Final Reflections & Tips 🎿
14. Yukata & Onsen Culture 🧖♂️
Yukata + onsen = ultimate Japanese relaxation ritual.
Dream home goal: personal sauna + onsen-style bath with polar plunges!
15. Transport Hacks 🚍
Direct bus from Hakuba to Kanazawa: 5 hr, ¥4,500, arrives midday.
Buses vs. Shinkansen: often cheaper, sometimes slower, but easy-day budgeting.
