On 26 January 2006, Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh was interviewed by ITN's Lindsey Hilsum following the militant Islamist organisation's victory in the Palestinian legislative election. While Hamas had been expected to win in Gaza, their victory in the West Bank shocked not only the defeated Fatah but Hamas members themselves. Many in the Palestinian territories, Israel, and the wider world were appalled by the victory of Hamas, an organisation committed to the destruction of Israel and responsible for nearly 60 suicide bombings in the previous five years. Others hoped that participating in the political process and dealing with the responsibilities of day-to-day governance might tame the movement. Haniyeh insisted, however, that "there is no contradiction between armed resistance and politics."
