"M.L. Wang is such a strong writer. She’s on my auto buy list. I read The Sword of Kaigen after finishing Blood Over Bright Haven, so my expectations were high. I’ve learned sooo much, so I apologize if this review is a bit longer, but I need to get some things off my chest.

M.L. Wang clearly loves her characters. She loves everything about them so much that she spends every waking moment making sure they are all fully developed. It’s nearly impossible not to be invested, not just in the main characters, but in all of them. The emotions, the arcs, even for the side characters, are so surprisingly rich. She develops them with such care that they feel incredibly real. It’s like she pours all her emotions into her characters and they are an amalgamation of all things human.

The plot itself was my biggest issue. The beginning felt a little too long, a tad slow, quite the opposite of Blood Over Bright Haven. It’s not a bad thing, just not what I expected. But then… the middle portion, like the middle 70%, is absolute perfection. I was hooked. I listened during my drives to work and read every night after the kids went to bed. The emotions, the pacing, the character growth, the depth of the mental and emotional journeys, the magic system, pure perfection. I felt every emotion a human can feel and I think that is just a testament to how great she is a writer.

Then came the last chapter. I was actually confused. It opened up new plot lines and then… it just ended. I honestly think if the beginning was shortened a bit, and that last chapter was cut, this book would be damn near perfect.

End of review, just sharing my thoughts.

The sign of a good author is their ability to listen to criticism and grow from it. I can’t say this definitively, but it seemed like everything I didn’t love about The Sword of Kaigen was corrected in Blood Over Bright Haven. If I had read Sword of Kaigen first and then moved on to Blood Over Bright Haven, I would’ve felt like M.L. Wang answered all my prayers. That's all.
I will for sure be reading anything she writes from here on out."
