The Hoover Dam opened 88 years ago on March 1, 1936. The Hoover Dam is about 35 miles southeast of Las Vegas and lies on the Nevada-Arizona border. This structure is 726.4 feet high and 1,244 feet long. In addition, there are approximately 4,360,000 cubic yards of concrete in the dam, which is enough concrete to pave a strip 16 feet wide and 8 inches thick from San Francisco to New York City! At the time of its inception, the Hoover Dam was the world’s tallest dam and was the world’s largest hydroelectric station from 1939 to 1949.
