Six rescues in a single rescue run - but one entanglement was unlike anything we usually encounter.
Instead of the usual fishing line or plastic straps, this seal was trapped in a solid steel API ring gasket, a component used to seal industrial pipelines under high pressure. We had to look it up ourselves, because we had never seen one entangled around an animal before.
These gaskets belong in the industrial zones of ships and oil platforms, not in the ocean, certainly not on the neck of a young seal.
Thankfully, we found him just in time. His neck was starting to swell, and any later would have made removal impossible without cutting. In this case, we were able to slide it off, but only just. This rescue is brutal evidence that industrial pollution isn’t just numbers or stats.
