This is a Motormouth couple car video talking about the latest 2025 J.D. Power Initial Quality Study covering 2025 models for the first 90 days of ownership.
Despite the growing complexity of new vehicles, there were less problems in the first 90 days. Overall problems have improved by two points per 100 vehicles from 194 to 192 from a year ago. Premium brands have improved by 27 points largely driven by Tesla.
2025 J.D. Power Initial Quality Study states mass market brands on the other hand are worse in 2025 by 6 points citing quality issues.
2025 J.D. Power Initial Quality Study found fewer physical vehicle controls and more problematic touchscreens make it more challenging for consumers. While the infotainment category has improved, it is still a problem. Owners are having issues with features all being done in the screen like climate controls and opening a glove box. Consumers do find the larger screen appealing, they don’t want everything done in the screen. Having to swipe through the screen to get to basic features is frustrating. Owners are finding this way too complicated.
Lexus ranks highest in the luxury category and Nissan amongst mass market brands.
Premium vehicles have more defects/malfunction related issues, exteriors have the largest discrepancy.
For the first time, PHEVs have more problems than BEVs with gasoline and hybrids having less problems. The improvement in BEVs is driven by Tesla.
