This seal was found with a box strap embedded deep in its neck, partially hidden, partially slicing him open. It had frayed just enough to avoid detection, but not enough to snap. Our team managed to extract it, but not before it left a raw, gaping wound that could’ve easily led to starvation or infection.
Most of the box straps we encounter come from bait boxes used in the fishing industry. The Namibian fishing industry is one of the largest economic forces in the country, and one of the most frequent sources of this kind of pollution. All it would take is a single change: cut the loop before disposal. It’s simple, effective, and could prevent countless entanglements like this one.
