Global National: Feb. 26, 2022 | Ukraine mounts determined defence as Russian forces advance

In our top story tonight: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is maintaining his resolve and his position in the capital Kyiv even as Russia continues its move into the capital city. It comes as European leaders, as well as Canada and the U.S. are stepping up economic pressure, now blocking selective Russian banks from accessing the SWIFT financial messaging system, which helps facilitate cross border banking. The Ukrainian government says at least 200 people have been killed on its soil during the invasion by Russia. Crystal Goomansingh is in Poland with more on the ongoing developments. Amid the siege on the Ukrainian capital, residents of Kyiv remain under a curfew as battles continue between Ukrainian and Russian forces. The Associated Press' Joe Federman discusses how fierce the fighting is Saturday night and where it's concentrated. Canada's ambassador to the U.N., Bob Rae, calls the attack on Ukraine a 'grotesque war crime.' But beyond stern words, what can the U.N. do about what's unfolding in Ukraine. Mercedes Stephenson has more. Ukraine has been imploring Western countries for aid and it looks like some help is on the way. It's coming in the form of money but also through international pressure on Russia. Jennifer Johnson has more on what is being done. Turning to COVID-19, as we enter the third year of the pandemic, there is a lot of discussion on how to permanently move on from restrictions. Jeff Semple looks at how that will impact the frontlines of our health-care system. Plastic pollution will be front-and-centre at the United Nations Environment Assembly starting next week, with negotiations on a treaty to deal with the problem. As Redmond Shannon reports, the focus won't be just on waste but on tackling plastic production as well. As Russia's siege on Ukraine continues to escalate, so too does global opposition to the Kremlin's actions. Protests opposing the Russian invasion are growing, not only in cities across Europe but also right here in Canada. Mike Drolet takes a looks at the sentiment of those taking to the streets.
