In this video, we dive deep into one of the most extraordinary chapters of Australia’s geological history—two separate times when vast inland seas flooded the heart of the continent. These immense bodies of water, known as the Eromanga Sea and the Larapintine Sea, were not just shallow lakes or localised basins. They were epic, continent-spanning marine environments that transformed the face of ancient Australia, creating ecosystems that rivalled those of modern oceans and leaving behind rich fossil evidence that still fascinates scientists today.
The Eromanga Sea formed during the Early Cretaceous period, around 110 million years ago, when global sea levels were significantly higher than they are today. This sea covered huge swathes of Queensland, South Australia, the Northern Territory, and New South Wales. It was part of a vast inland marine system that connected with global oceans and allowed marine life to thrive deep within the Australian landmass. Fossils of ichthyosaurs, plesiosaurs, and ammonites, along with marine bird-like creatures and fish, have been found across this region, offering an unprecedented window into the biodiversity of ancient marine environments. The fine-grained sediments deposited by the Eromanga Sea would later form oil-bearing shales, sandstones and siltstones—rocks that now form part of Australia’s valuable geological resources.
But this was not the first time Australia had an inland sea. Hundreds of millions of years earlier, during the Paleozoic era, another vast body of water called the Larapintine Sea stretched across central Australia. This sea extended from what is now the northern coast of the continent down toward the interior, creating a long, shallow marine corridor. It existed intermittently from the Cambrian through to the Devonian periods, with periods of regression and transgression controlled by tectonic movements and eustatic sea level changes. The Larapintine Sea played a critical role in the formation of central Australian sedimentary basins, including the Amadeus and Georgina Basins. Fossils from this era include trilobites, brachiopods, early fish, and reef-building organisms, many of which are found today in the form of beautifully preserved marine limestone and dolomite formations.
If you’ve ever wondered what lies beneath the red sands of the outback or how today’s dry, arid centre was once a thriving marine ecosystem, this is the story for you. Learn how the vast deserts of central Australia were once underwater realms filled with marine reptiles, giant invertebrates and thick coral reefs. Discover the evidence that proves these seas existed, where you can still see their remains today, and how they helped shape the Australia we know now.
