Carbon Buildup Nightmare! GM 1.6L Turbo Diesel Engine Failure

Here’s a look inside the General Motors LY7 Diesel engine and how it works! The LY7 is a 1.6L turbocharged 4 cylinder diesel engine used in the Chevrolet Equinox, GMC Terrain and Chevrolet Cruze. Designed in Italy, it was intended for use as an economy engine, with a lot of plastics incorporated to quiet down what is otherwise a noisy powertrain. The timing chain was thus located at the back of the engine, which would be to its detriment as timing chain related failures were all too common. This would require transmission or engine removal from the vehicle in order to correct it, if the timing chain rattle was caught early enough to save the engine from self-destruction. Moreover, the diesel’s requirement of exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) and direct injection only meant severe carbon buildup in the intake side that would choke out the intake stream, causing drivability concerns. The bottom end of this engine was built fairly robust, with newer (albeit non-traditional) technology such as a variable oil pump with an integrated vacuum pump, variable piston lubrication sprayer control and a direct injection pump powered by the timing chain. The engine in this video suffered from severe intake carbon buildup. It was from a 2018 GMC Terrain with only a 120,000km. It also suffered a timing chain failure, due to the tensioner not being able to hold timing. Upon inspection, the ratcheting mechanism was no longer existent.
