In this episode, the 1997 Peruvian hostage crisis unfolded when the Maoist guerrilla group Túpac Amaru Revolutionary Movement (MRTA) took over 700 hostages at the Japanese ambassador’s residence in Lima on December 17, 1996. The standoff lasted for 126 days, with the government of President Alberto Fujimori initially attempting negotiations before opting for a military solution. On April 22, 1997, Peruvian commandos executed Operation Chavín de Huántar, storming the residence and successfully rescuing all hostages while killing all 14 MRTA militants. This operation not only bolstered Fujimori's popularity but also significantly weakened the MRTA, marking a turning point in Peru's struggle against insurgency and raising important questions about human rights and state responses to terrorism.
