Ambergris forms inside the body of a sperm whale. When a whale swallows a squid, its sharp beak is difficult to digest. To protect its intestines, the whale secretes a special waxy substance: ambergris. The ambergris is then regurgitated or expelled into the sea, where it floats for years until it hardens and matures naturally. Despite coming from the digestion of marine animals, ambergris is highly prized for its ability to bind scents and extend the shelf life of perfumes. This is why the high-end perfume industry pays top dollar for it.
