A devastating 8.8-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula, triggering tsunami waves up to three to five meters high across the Pacific. Buildings were damaged in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatski, the Klyuchevskaya Sopka volcano erupted, and millions of people were evacuated to safer areas. More than one hundred aftershocks with magnitudes ranging from 4.0 to 6.7 have been recorded since the quake. Tsunami warnings were issued across the Pacific, and alerts were even raised as far away as California and Peru. Aftershocks are still continuing, and authorities warn that the danger in the region is not yet over.
