Gill nets are banned in most parts of the world for a reason: they are indiscriminate killers. These fine, nearly invisible mesh nets trap anything that swims into them, including endangered species and marine mammals. That’s why their use is strictly prohibited in Namibian waters. According to the fishing industry, gill nets are not in use here.
And yet, here we are again.
This young seal pup is entangled in a piece of gill net. exactly the kind of gear that isn’t supposed to be in our ocean. But enforcement is thin, with few inspectors on the ground and almost no consistent oversight. So while the law may be in place, reality tells a different story. It’s very likely that illegal gill nets are far more common than the authorities or the industry will admit.
We rescue what we can, but until the laws are enforced, animals like this will continue to suffer.
