Learn about Helium (2) in less than 1 minute! Periodic Table of Elements Series.

Today’s episode is about Helium. Helium’s atomic number is 2, and it’s a colorless, odorless, tasteless, and non-toxic gas. It has the lowest boiling and melting point amongst all elements. It’s the second most abundant chemical in the universe, it makes 24% of all normal matter. Helium is also a noble gas, some elements are called noble because they don’t like to react with other elements under most circumstances. You know, because they think they’re better than everyone else. Although it’s so abundant in the universe, it’s actually quite rare on our planet. This is because Helium is so light that it can escape Earth’s gravity. We get Helium from natural gas deposits with the USA being the number 1 producer. So what is Helium used for? Well, it’s mainly used for cryogenics and cooling stuff down. For example the magnets in MRI scanners need to be cooled down to around -300 degrees celsius to operate and we do that by utilizing Liquid Helium. It’s also used for creating Germanium, Titanium, Zirconium, and Silicon which is used in microchips and the device you’re using to listen to me right now. They also use it in Arc Welding, and rocket ships. You’ve seen it in balloons and some people inhale it to change their voice, but some people have died doing it by suffocating, so I don’t really recommend it. Like and Follow.
