Acetone is a strong chemical solvent that will remove contaminants from the surface. Always test the cleaning method on a small and inconspicuous area of the plastic surface, as acetone destroys some types of plastic. Never use acetone on painted plastic, as acetone will remove the varnish and paint.
There are several types of plastic. If a particular plastic bears a close enough resemblance to acetone, acetone will dissolve or at least affect its surface by softening, smearing, or even dissolving the plastic. Other plastics that do not resemble acetone will not be affected by the solvent.
You can dissolve plastic for bonding with the following materials:
acetone (C3H6O);
methyl ethyl ketone or butanone (C4H8O);
dichloroethane (Cl2HC-CH3 or ClH2C-CH2Cl);
tetrahydrofuran (C4H8O);
dichloromethane (CH2Cl2).
