The Phuket Vegetarian Festival is about so much more than just the food. It is a Taoist celebration for the Nine Emperor Gods at the many Chinese shrines all over the Thai island of Phuket. Worshippers dressed in white honor the nine emperor gods by not eating meat and not drinking alcohol over the 9 days of the festival.

They do this in remembrance of their Chinese ancestors who came to Thailand and got extremely ill with a plague. When traditional medicine did not help, the travelers decided to go on a strict vegan diet and prayed to the Nine Emperor Gods for healing. Every traveler recovered giving birth to this annual vegetarian festival.

This festival is famous for the maasong who are worshippers who volunteer their bodies for the gods to come down to Earth. They get in a trance-like state, pierce their cheeks with spikes, cut their tongues with swords, and walk on fire.

The Phuket Vegetarian Festival has been going on since the 1800’s and is celebrated all over the country of Thailand. However, the festival in Phuket remains the largest.
