Airless tires offer many advantages. So why aren't they more widely used? An airless tire is an alternative technology designed to eliminate the risk of punctures and blowouts associated with conventional tires. Because they don't rely on air pressure, they won't burst even if punctured by a sharp object. This concept has long been in development, including by NASA, for spacecraft that require extreme durability. Despite its promise, this technology has yet to be widely applied to everyday vehicles. The main challenge is its limited shock-absorbing capacity and suboptimal thermal performance. This type of tire is also at risk of permanent deformation when subjected to excessive loads, and its complex structure makes it quite costly to produce.
