As we stepped inside Pyongyang’s iconic Juche Tower, we were immediately greeted by our assigned tour guide, a woman dressed in a vibrant pink hanbok. She spoke to us in Russian, a common language for foreign visitors, as she passionately explained the ideological significance of the tower.
But what caught our attention even more was the ever-present cameraman, following and filming our every move. We were told this was for a souvenir video we could purchase at the end of our trip—but was that the real reason? It felt like there was more to it, as if our actions and reactions were being carefully monitored.
