Global National: Sept. 12, 2020 | Quebecers now face a hefty fine for not wearing a mask

Like many Canadians, we are keeping an eye on the upward trend of new COVID-19 cases in the country. Health officials are urging everyone to continue the effort to stop the spread of COVID-19 as we navigate the re-opening of schools and businesses. Despite the warnings and fears of a second wave, there are people ignoring restrictions intended to prevent new infections. But as Mike Drolet reports, being in one province without a mask could land you a hefty fine. The concerns over a potential second wave are raising questions over the federal government’s pandemic plan going forward. This week Mercedes Stephenson raises those questions with health minister Patty Hajdu as well as the Conservative health critic. As if college or university isn’t stressful enough, add in the pandemic. Post secondary institutions are implementing a variety of approaches to keep students safe. Ross Lord takes a look at how we are balancing normalcy with keeping COVID-19 in check. Wildfires south of the border are burning from Washington State all the way down to Mexico. At least 26 people have been killed and more than a million hectares have been scorched. As Jennifer Johnson explains, firefighters are struggling to get the wildfires under control. Thousands of asylum seekers have spent a fourth night sleeping outside after flames destroyed their camp. A series of deliberately set fires have burned down the notoriously overcrowded Moria refugee camp this week. As Redmond Shannon reports, the refugees are now demanding to leave the Greek Island of Lesbos. After spending nearly 50 years together an Ontario couple’s decision to split up may have saved their lives. The two were hiking in the woods and got lost. It was four days before they decided the only way to get out was to separate. Each took a different route. Caryn Lieberman shows us how they managed to get back together again. The Toronto Raptors and their fans are feeling heartbroken today. Their dream of winning another NBA championship is now over after the Boston Celtics won Game 7 of the eastern conference semi-finals last night. But no matter who triumphs with the trophy and no matter the league the cloud of COVID-19 will still hang over them. Morganne Campbell tonight on the sustainability of sports during the pandemic.
