New Zealand's formation is an incredible story of tectonic collisions. After it split apart from Australia, Zealandia, the largely submerged continent upon which New Zealand sits, began to rift and spread apart, almost completely inundating New Zealand beneath the waves of the pacific ocean. What saved it was the complex subduction zones that formed and the continent to continent collision with the indo-australian tectonic plate, which saw the rise of mountains and the generation of volcanoes that added much needed land to the almost completely submerged landmass.

New Zealand's geological story is one of complicated tectonic processes and pronounced volcanism.
