Severe torrential rains hit the southwestern South Korean city of Gwangju on July 17, 2025, causing the Gwangjucheon River to overflow and triggering a large-scale flood disaster across the city. Within hours, rainfall exceeded 386 mm, paralyzing public transportation, flooding subway stations, forcing the evacuation of thousands, and causing extensive damage to the city’s infrastructure.
