Software engineering jobs at these top tech companies like Google, Facebook, Amazon, and Microsoft are extremely competitive because they all have high starting salaries. A recent college graduate software engineer can make upwards of $200K USD per year!

The fastest way to become a software developer is to get internships while in college. Then perform well at your internships. Hopefully, you'll get a return full-time offer for the company you interned at. If that's not an option for you don't worry!

So the software engineering interview process goes like this:
1. Coding Challenge Interview
After you submit your resume/cv, you'll enter the initial screening process at Google. If you pass, then you'll be asked to complete a series of coding questions online. You'll be judged on your technical skills.

2. Phone Interview
If you pass the coding challenge, then you'll move onto the phone interview. During this stage, you'll be asked to answer a series of coding questions while talking with your interviewer. You'll be typing your code into a shared text editor, and you'll have to explain your thought process as you program. This stage will judge your communication and coding skills.

3. On-Site Interviews
The last stage is the most phone! Big companies such as Google will fly you out to their headquarters for 2 days, FOR FREE! You'll have time to go sightseeing for one day, and the other day, you'll do a full day of interviews. These interviews include behavioral and technical interview questions. The best way to pass these is to do mock interviews with your friends or recruiters.

If you managed to pass all of that, then CONGRATULATIONS! You should now have a job offer at Google. The next step is to NEGOTIATE your salary.

Software engineering salary can vary wildly depending on your negotiations. You need to outperform in your interview stage and you need competing job offers to get a high salary.
