What doesn't go together with a freshly built road? A super volcano. It probably comes to no surprise that building ontop of an active supervolcano is a bad idea, but what might be surprising is the fact that the magma chamber, which is about 8km deep by the way, manages to heat the ground up to the point where it can literally melt the asphalt that was laid down on the surface, especially during hot summer days where the heat of the sun mixes with the heat produced by the hydrothermal activity of the yellowstone supervolcano.

We cover a brief history of the yellowstone magmatic system and we take a quick look at the dozens of past supervolcanic eruptions that have occurred from here since 55 million years ago, when this hotspot was in the pacific ocean, only to have the North American tectonic plate slowly drift westwards over it, stifling the ability to release magma, and causing the melting of continental crust, creating the chemistry required to produce gigantic supervolcanic eruptions.

This supervolcanic magma chamber is believe to be 40 to 80 kilometers across, and it heats the surrounding bedrock up to the point that water that seeps into the ground gets heated up and forced back up towards the surface due to the strong convection currents being produced by this phenomenon, leading the all of the hydrothermal activity that we see in present day in the Yellowstone National Park, from the amazing geysers to the incredible hot springs, filled with extremophile bacterial life, and so acidic it will melt anything that it comes into contact with.
