Mercedes-Benz is in advanced talks with BMW to source four-cylinder petrol engines beginning in 2027.

The deal would likely involve BMW's B48 2.0L turbo engine, a proven modular unit capable of plug-in hybrid and range-extender applications.

Mercedes is making this move because its own new M252 engine, built in China, is unsuitable for

PHEV and range-extender roles and faces tariff challenges in the U.S. market.

Models expected to use BMW engines include the CLA, GLA, GLB, C-Class, E-Class, GLC, and the upcoming "Little G" off-roader.

Production would be handled at BMW's Steyr factory in Austria, with the possibility of a joint U.S. facility to avoid import tariffs.

The collaboration would help Mercedes cut R&D costs, meet Euro 7 regulations, and expand its hybrid lineup more effectively.

BMW benefits from increased production volume and revenue, as well as the prestige of supplying engines to its longtime rival.

Negotiations are described as highly advanced, with a formal announcement expected by the end of 2025.
