Denmark will object to any claims on Greenland, Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen said on Thursday after a meeting in Brussels with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen told reporters after his meeting with Rubio that Greenland had not been on their agenda.

"But of course, I took the opportunity to very strongly object to claims and presidential statements of a vision of acquiring Greenland," he said.

Meanwhile, Denmark's Prime Minister advocated for enhanced Arctic defence collaboration with the United States, but firmly dismissed what she described as attempts by the U.S. to annex the semi-autonomous Danish territory.

“You cannot annex another country, not even with an argument about international security,” she said.

“If you want to be more present in Greenland, Greenland and Denmark are ready. And if you would like to strengthen the security in the Arctic, just like us, then let us do it together”.
