Here's what we learned ⬇️

This winter we tried growing oyster mushrooms indoors. Although it didn't go as planned, we learned a lot from the experience!

1️⃣ There are several different ways to grow mushrooms. We chose to grow ours in trays using the @bootstrapfarmer Mushroom Grow Kit. We purchased grain spawn to mix with a substrate.
2️⃣ There are endless options for substrates. We used a mix of coconut coir and spent coffee grounds at a ratio of ~4:1.
3️⃣ Sanitation is REALLY important when growing mushrooms. We rubbed all of our trays and humidity domes with 70% isopropyl alcohol before getting started.
4️⃣ When you buy spawn, make sure to follow the company's recommendations for how much spawn to mix with the substrate. This is where we really messed up! We followed a different recommendation that we had found elsewhere and ended up mixing wayyy too much spawn with the substrate we had.
5️⃣ Mushrooms take time to grow - plan accordingly! We started our mushrooms around the holidays and ended up taking them with us for Christmas to keep an eye on them - 20/20 hindsight, we should've left them and they would've been 100% fine.

We started a second batch of mushrooms and they are currently in the mycelium stage, growing in our @Bootstrapfarmer trays with the blackout domes! Hopefully this time around we get a successful harvest 🤞
