As railway travel became increasingly popular with the British public, luggage thefts were frequent, and violent robberies occasionally occurred. Critics of the railways painted a grim picture of the dangers faced by lone passengers in the unlit carriages. Trains at the time lacked corridor connections, and incidents of men being robbed and women assaulted happened often enough to fuel the pessimism of opponents and provide sensational headlines for hostile sections of the press.

The first railway murder, however, did not take place until 1864, marking one of the most shocking crimes of the century. This new drama-documentary series, presented by Nicholas Day and created by the team behind Murder Maps, delves into some of the murders that occurred on the British railway network from the 1800s to the 1950s.
