This is a Motormouth couple car comparison of the all-new 2022 Nissan pathfinder and new Toyota Highlander. The 2022 Pathfinder is longer than the Highlander and offers best in class front legroom, extra 3rd row legroom and more cargo space behind the 3rd row. The Toyota is the winner in 2nd row legroom by almost 6 inches and in overall cargo capacity. They are 7-8 passenger SUVs depending on the trim you choose. Both the Highlander and Pathfinder come with 3.5L V6 engines, the Pathfinder has a 9 speed-automatic transmission and the Highlander an 8-speed. The Toyota offers 295 horsepower and 263 lb-ft of torque, the Pathfinder, 284 horsepower and 259 lb-ft of torque. The Highlander and Pathfinder come with comparable standard features like an 8” touchscreen, both have an optional 12.3” on the top trim, Apple Carplay and Android Auto, cloth seats, heated front seats, LED headlights, blind spot monitoring and rear-cross traffic alert. The Pathfinder comes standard with a heated steering wheel, but this feature is only available on the Highlander top trim. The Pathfinder offers more features just two up from the base model on the SL trim compared to the Highlander. Features like leather appointed seats, driver seat memory, heated second row seats and wireless Apple Carplay are standard on the SL trim but not available unless you buy the top trims of the the Highlander. The Toyota does not offer wireless Apple Carplay. The Highlander Limited trim is just over $52,150 CAD and the Platinum $54,450 CAD, the Pathfinder SL is $50,398 CAD. That is a savings of $1,752 to $4,000 CAD for the Pathfinder with the extra features. For fuel economy, the Highlander gets 11.8L/100km, 20 MPG city and 8.6L/100km, 27 MPG highway. The Pathfinder gets 11.6L/100km, 20 MPG city and9.2L/100km, 25 MPG Highway.The Highlander can tow 5,000 pounds and the Pathfinder 6,000 pounds. The Pathfinder interior is all, new. Thanks to the additional interior volume, this SUV offers easier cargo and family loading with wider rear doors and room for up to 8-passengers which is new for the Pathfinder. Nissan increased the hip room in the 3rd row by almost 5 inches to increase the seating capacity from 2 to 3 seats. Captain’s chairs are now available for the first time and are standard on the top trim, all other trims get a bench seat. The Pathfinder has a removable centre console on the top trim, no tools are needed and allows items up to 7 inches wide to pass through the captain’s chairs. There is also easier entry and exit from the 3rd row with one touch seating which pitches the seat forward to provide a wide opening for the driver or passenger side even with a car seat attached.
Two up from the base model comes standard with the bigger 9” touchscreen, ProPilot with Navigation, driver seat memory, leather appointed seats, heated second row seats, gun metallic brushed trim instead of piano black trim and wireless Apple Carplay.
The top trim will get you some extra features like a 12.3” digital driver display, ambient lighting, quilted leather appointed seats, ventilated front seats, a bronze metallic brushed interior, head-up display, wireless charger and a 13-speaker Bose sound system. The Highlander offers a comfortable cabin, well-designed cabin. On the higher trims the interior feels more luxurious with soft padded surfaces and stitching, available ambient lighting and inset steering wheel controls. The base model comes standard with an 8” touch screen, 4.2” driver display Apple Carplay and Android Auto, heated front fabric seats, a second row bench seat that slides and reclines and the 3rd row lies flat and also reclines. SofTex seats are standard on the middle XLE trim and leather on the top Limited trim. This top trim also comes with driver seat memory, a heated steering wheel, an 11-speaker JBL sound system and heated and ventilated front seats. You can also add the Platinum Package to this Limited trim for $2,300 CAD to get the head-up display, the bigger 12.3” touchscreen, captain’s chairs and heated second row seats. A wireless charger is standard on the top two trims.
