The first publication of the Obsidienne ensemble dates back to 1995, since then the ensemble directed by Emmanuel Bonnardot has released several albums ranging from medieval to Renaissance repertoire, also paying attention to traditional music.

“Medieval Meditations”, a title that speaks clearly and an album that requires a certain mental flexibility to listen. Purists might have something to say, but the limit is theirs and theirs alone. Philology is very important and I am the first to tremble when I see bouzuki or toms among the musical instruments of some groups that pass themselves off as medieval musicians, but unfortunately the Middle Ages have left us very little and often what the sources contain can be contradictory and vague. We know musical instruments whose names we can barely understand since in written sources they change continuously, we have square notations that give us wonderful melodies, but we have to hypothesize the rhythm and therefore probably the best solution is to try to fill these gaps with popular, traditional music and improvisation, an ancestral element that has been omnipresent since the early days of humanity. Philology and a historically accurate approach are always a good thing, but they must not become a limit for art by inventing rules that do not exist. Meditazioni Medievali is a record that I loved from the first listen, I hope it will be the same for you. I will definitely investigate further the discography of Obsidienne: I will buy other records that I hope to be able to share with you.

Concerning the video: yes, this wonderful recording is at times truly psychedelic and so I thought of using one of the most psychedelic manuscripts of the Middle Ages, the Offiziolo of Gian Galeazzo Visconti compiled by the great Lombard artist Giovannino de' Grassi in 14th century.
