Is Norman Artificial Intelligence truly a 'psychopath'? I would not say so.

First, the portrayal of 'Norman' in such manner taps into the human need to identify with robots. We get weird around things looking like us or the ones that we perceive to be looking like us. Giving the AI algorithm a name and linking it to a famous character are tools to give identity to the dry lines of code. 'Pschopathic AI Norman' is much more exciting then 'Machine Learning Algorithm'.

Second, psychopathy, as a term, is not (yet) applicable to AI agents. Psychopath is defined as 'a person suffering from chronic mental disorder with abnormal or violent social behaviour'. Artificial intelligence is not a 'person', nor the (dis)order is 'mental'.

Third, this brilliant research from MIT shows the impact of bias in data and raises awareness about the need for thorough data preprocessing. AI algorithms are completely and totally reliant on the data that you 'feed' them. I applaud the research bringing these issues to light. Crucially, I also believe that AI will help us expose some of those hidden biases that we have!
