There's been a geological anomaly in Ballarat that has annoyed me for years. It just made no sense. But, a few months ago, I stumbled across a research article that connected the missing dots, and, ever since then, many parts of Victoria that made no sense to me, suddenly took on a new life, as I could finally fit in the missing piece of the puzzle that would allow me to explain how and why they formed.
This has massive implications, especially regarding mineral exploration, and, in this video, we're kick starting a brand new series where we take a look at exactly what happened here, and why, to finally explain how Victoria changed in recent geologically history, ever since it rifted from Antarctica.
This is the last episode in the Black Hill / Brown Hill Ranges series which focused on the set of geological events that led to the uplift of this part of the hill, and the subsidence of the adjacent land in the process, as a result of the geological phenomenon known as Horst and graben events. This set up uplifted and subsided pieces of land, occur all through the western most parts of Victoria, and owe their existence to the fascinating time when Australia and Antarctica rifted apart, in an even known as a divergent plate boundary.
In Ballarat, this mean the uplift of the hill known as Black hill, which, before this occurred, was actually the site of an ancient river, that's literally never been discussed or not as even having existed to my knowledge.
