This is a couple car review of the all-new Mazda CX-90 mid-size 4-row SUV. The Mazda CX-90 is sold with a 3.3L inline 6 turbo with a mild hybrid system, an 8-speed automatic transmission, 340 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque when using the recommended premium fuel. Standard AWD. The electric motor has been placed between the transmission and engine which Mazda says, creates a smoother acceleration from a standstill and allows the motor to directly power the CX-90 at low speeds. This Mazda inline 6 turbo is developed specifically for the large platform, Mazda’s all new rear biased AWD layout that Mazda says supports a performance focused experience. Kinematic posture control which was first introduced on the MX-5 Roadster is standard on all CX-90 models. It’s a software feature that suppresses body lift on tight corners and will help bring Mazda’s signature driving dynamics to this 3-row SUV. Mazda says, this engine is not only powerful but responsive and it has the highest horsepower and torque from a mass production gas engine developed by Mazda. Mazda says, it will have an engaging driving experience with a rewarding exhaust note. The second powertrain option on the Mazda CX-90 is a 2.5L 4-cylinder plug-in hybrid with an 8-speed automatic transmission. It has a 17.8 kWh battery and a combined 322 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque when using the recommended premium fuel. EV range has not been announced yet. Standard AWD. Mazda says this PHEV is designed to operate purely on the electric motor in a variety of driving scenarios. Both models come with Standard i-Activsense safety features including blind spot monitoring and Mazda Radar Cruise Control. The CX-90’s cabin is exactly what we would expect from Mazda, it provides a sense of luxury with a mix of materials including available Nappa leather, wood and tone on tone fabrics.The Mazda CX-90 also features larger displays including a 12.3” centre display and physical buttons. There is also an available See-Through View monitor to assist in a variety of parking situations through the centre display. Mazda says, the interior is inspired by traditional Japanese aesthetics. The distinctive fabric on the dash is connected using hanging stitches which is specifically inspired by hand book binding and an intricate Japanese weaving technique. Captain’s chairs are available as well as available third row USB-C charging ports and air conditioning vents.
